In Memory of

Thomas Carroll

August 16, 1948 - November 11, 2013
Thomas Carroll, 65, of Leawood, KS, passed away Monday, November 11, 2013, at the home he shared with his wife Peggy, after a heroic 5½ year battle with cancer. He was born in New York City to parents, William and Dorothy Carroll on August 16, 1948. Tom attended St. Johns Elementary School and DeWitt Clinton High School in Bronx, NY, where he spent his childhood. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1971-1974, then served in the U.S. Naval Reserve until retiring in 1994. After his return from active duty, Tom attended Herbert H. Lehman College and graduated cum laude in January, 1977. He was a member of Psi Chi, the NHS in Psychology, and Alpha Kappa Delta, the NHS in Sociology. Tom received the Departmental Award for Scholarship in Sociology at graduation. Tom received his MS in Telecommunications in May, 1991 and a Mini-MBA from KU in April, 2000. He worked in the telecom industry his entire working career, starting at NY Telephone, then for AT&T, Sprint, Nortel and Intelepeer. He volunteered numerous times for United Way projects and got great satisfaction out of his involvement with Junior Achievement.
Tom is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Carroll (Kass), whom he married in May, 1975 on Long Island, New York, and his children Colleen Patricia, Sean and wife Melissa, Jillian Ann, Daniel William and Travis James. He is also survived by siblings Elaine (John) O'Brien, Kevin (Doreen) Carroll and Richard (Glorimar) Carroll, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and numerous extended family members and many friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William.
Tom was never one to hide the pride he felt for his children and their activities and accomplishments, or to express an opinion on any given subject, whether he was asked or not. The happiest moment towards the end of his life was learning that Sean and Melissa are expecting their first child in June, 2014. It took quite a while for that smile to fade.
Tom and Peggy want to thank the amazing individuals of Catholic Community Hospice, most especially Martin McKinnell, Patricia Robinson, and Donda McLaughlin for the compassionate and loving care that Tom and the family received from them.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 18th, at McGilley State Line Chapel, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, November 19th, 10:30 a.m., at Church of the Nativity, 3800 West 119th, Leawood, KS, with burial following in Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas High School Soccer Program.
